Located in Gunnison County, the fifth largest county in Colorado, Mount Crested Butte lies around three miles north of the town of Crested Butte and approximately 31 miles north of the city of Gunnison, the county seat. More than 9,000 feet above sea level, the peaceful mountain resort community of Mt. Crested Butte is known as a paradise surrounded by spectacular mountain views, natural wonders, and tons of snow that’s absolutely perfect for skiing, snowboarding and a variety of other outdoor activities.

You can get to Mt. Crested Butte via the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, where you can hop aboard a free Mountain Express shuttle that can take you to town. You can drive through picturesque scenery too if you’d prefer, but it’s easier to do this during the summer months, as most secondary passes that take you to Mt. Crested Butte are closed during the winter.

Mt. Crested Butte is inhabited by some of the most nature-loving, adventurous, kind and generous residents you’ll ever meet. The area is home to plenty of volunteer non-profit organizations that strive to preserve the natural environment in order to sustain the great quality of life that’s unique to the community. Many of its residents were originally vacationers who were thrilled by the place, came back, bought a home and are now living in the area as permanent residents.

Attractions

Crested Butte is known as “the last great Colorado ski town,” and that’s largely due to the awesome skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Mt. Crested Butte’s most popular attraction.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort was opened by Dick Elfin and Fred Rice on Thanksgiving Day in 1961. The two men from Kansas were looking for the ideal area to start a ski resort, one that could compare to the Alps. What they found on the slopes of Mt. Crested Butte was a dream come true, the weather and the diverse terrain being simply perfect for skiing.

Today, Crested Butte Mountain Resort is widely known as one of the birthplaces of freeskiing. The resort has helped the sport of freeskiing prosper by hosting plenty of free ski and Telemark skiing extreme competitions. Many world-class champion skiers started their careers at Crested Butte Mountain Resort such as Seth Morrison and FIS Alpine Ski World Cup competitor and Winter Olympian Wendy Fisher. The freeskiing film production company known as Matchstick Productions is headquartered in the area as well.

Apart from hitting the slopes, there are a host of other recreational activities to do:

  • Summer is a great time to go hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, or rafting. Crested Butte Mountain Resort offers plenty of opportunities for exciting summer outdoor activities, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers of all ages.
  • Take the Crested Butte Zipline Tour, an exhilarating experience that includes five zip lines that range from 120 to 400 feet in length, as well as suspended wood bridges and lofty platforms. The whole tour takes about one and a half hour to two hours.
  • Just minutes away from the resort, you can go on a sled dog tour, an adventure that’s enjoyable for people of all ages. Go for a quick hour-long tour, or take the “Learn to Mush Tour,” where you get to be the head of a team of seasoned huskies. There’s also a whole day tour, where you can spend a whole day with the dogs surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
  • This may be a small town, but there’s a wealth of options when it comes to shopping and dining. Have a cup of coffee at a locally-owned coffee house in the morning, go shopping during the afternoon, and have dinner at a gourmet restaurant or hit the bars and nightclubs in the evening.
